Today marks the 81st anniversary of D-Day, the largest amphibious invasion in history — a day when courage stormed the beaches of Normandy and helped change the course of World War II.
On this day, over 156,000 Allied troops from the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and other nations launched Operation Overlord to begin the liberation of Nazi-occupied Europe.
They landed on five heavily defended beaches — Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword — supported by more than 5,000 ships and 11,000 aircraft.
The obstacles they faced were staggering:
• Steel-reinforced bunkers with machine guns and artillery
• Landmines buried in the sand and water
• Concrete anti-tank barriers known as “dragon’s teeth”
• Rows of barbed wire and beach obstacles designed to rip open landing craft
• Rough seas and strong currents that scattered landing forces
• A hail of bullets from entrenched German defenses positioned on cliffs and bluffs
Many of the troops were just teenage boys, barely out of high school. They waded through freezing water under relentless gunfire, fully aware that they were heading into almost certain death.
By the end of that day, more than 4,400 Allied soldiers had been killed. Thousands more were wounded or missing. And yet, they held the beach.
We remember their courage in the face of impossible odds. We honor their sacrifice. Freedom lives because of what they gave. We will never forget.
